While the version certainly maintains character traits, storylines, and unabashed sexiness of its predecessors, and eagle-eyed viewers will spot plenty of Easter eggs along the way, it is most certainly its own thing. To get one of the biggest spoilers out of the way, the Pulse-like shooting that caps the pilot could understandably keep people from engaging given how strongly the gun epidemic continues to rage. However, this kind of bigotry-fueled violence against queer people is an arguably necessary evil to portray on screen.

Folks in the closet feel a greater pressure to come out. Lonely gays gotta deal with watching all the happy gay couples being out and proud everywhere. Sometimes it can be as much of a headache as it is a good time for any of us, and the increasing corporatization and commodification of what was originally a very radical tradition in our community can be disheartening. So I thought, why the hell not?
